Think Global but eat local!

BCFMmag3ArtMy husband does three farmers markets a week  starting in June and ending in October. Some of the markets are well established and others are only 1 or 2 seasons old. As many of you may know we had quite a bit of rain this summer in the north east and this isn’t always great for the farmers or the farmers markets.  But the best basil I had this summer was from a farmers market and I try to buy all my vegeables and fruits from the local farmers markets or farm stands.  I know many people say ” I have no time to go to the markets or process  much of the bounty available”. But all you need is some freezer space, a cookie sheet and plastic bags. Peppers, onons, many berries and some stone fruits can be frozen cut up or as individual pieces on a cookie sheet and then put in a plastic bag. Don’t forget to get the excess air out before sealing the bag. Remember to put what it is, when it was processed and then keep a running account on our freezer of what is in there. This will not only save you money, but you will be able to have the produce at the peak of it’s flavor.  If you can’t tell by now that  I love food, but I will tell you more about that later. Right now it is tme to do some canning! oh one  more thing check the links for more information on safe canning and canning supplies!
